The voice-over said:“Morning tongue, nothing to be embarrassed about
Just your body building up excitement overnight….”“Satisfy yourself with cheesy tots.”

Some folks at YouTube had a good laugh over the commercial:

futsol55 said ” thanks burger king. thank you for making us guys laugh our heads off at your commercial and then have to awkwardly explain it to any girl we see it with. absolutely genius.”

GJGraheezy08: hahahaha, this is hilarious!”

Some wasn’t too amused.

Eliza Feree at TVBender stormed:

“It’s sick and it isn’t just adults catching this show…it’s KIDS! At what point did food companies decide it was time to use sex to sell their food.”

We know sex in advertising does help to drive sales volume, but is it wise to use sex to sell food, especially junk food where lots of toddlers and kids are the patrons? The kids may be clueless but I’m quite sure most of the parents aren’t too amused. What are they supposed to do? Conduct an instant human biology class? And maybe, proceed further with the birds and bees? Or should the parents simply tell their kids: “Oh, you’ll know when you grow up.” Parents enjoy sex but they usually squirmed when trying to explain sex to very young children. Burger King just succeeded to put these folks in a spot.

Call me conservative but leave sex out of products meant for families.

In my Christmas Ad-7 post, I said 7-up gave me a dated feel.

Watching this 1987 Christmas commercial made me feel the same way too. We know for a fact that Santa is aided by lots of elves and most elves are old men with long beard. However, these elves are just too old and too realistic for our liking. Whether in Enid Blyton’s or Walt Disney’s fairy tales, the elves are all cheery and friendly old souls with smiley face and twinkling eyes.

Another direct competitive commercial …

In this commercial, you will see younger brother literally dragged his old brother out of his bed because Santa visited the night before. Not only Santa ate the carefully prepared supper of cookies, he chose Sprite over 7-Up to go with the munchies. If immortal folks like Santa prefer Sprite, who are we – the mortals – to argue with? That’s the message the advertiser is sending to the public.

Honestly, I have no preference between Sprite and 7-Up. However, it’s true that 7-Up eludes a dated feel. It doesn’t made me feel young, hip and happening. It got nothing to do with the green bottle or the red dot but it got everything to do with the branding.
