Guilty of Turning a Work Trait into a Habit?
Jun 30th, 2007 by MAT.
I chuckled as I read Laura Spenser’s Are you a Writer (a humorous look at what we do). I write for my blog but I wouldn’t call myself a professional writer. Still, as a marketer, I found that I’ve committed some of the “crimes” she listed.
Laura said, “When other people drive through an unfamiliar neighborhood, they look at the sizes of the houses and speculate on the price. When you (the writer) drive through an unfamiliar neighborhood, you create mental word pictures of the people that might live in the houses”.
When I walked around the shopping malls, I did not just look at the shops and their wares. I looked at their signboards, advertisements, posters, promotional tags, wobbles, hanging mobiles, standing banner and the likes. My thoughts would be something like: “Wow, that is a good headline”, “I like the styling of that photo” or “We could have done better than that!” There were times this habit got in the way of shopping or dining and I would have friends rolling their eyeballs with the “there she goes again” look.
Laura also said: When other people get on the Internet they look for websites with games and gossip. When you get on the Internet you look for websites that need writers.
I’m guilty of looking out for design, writing, photography and marketing blogs. And it’s not just for reading. There is an eagerness to know the people who wrote those wonderful blog. That enthusiasm compels me to diligently write a comment to share my thoughts. It is interesting to note that serious bloggers will take time to response to his/her supporters’ feedback.
I believe we all do that because we are passionate of what we do, so much so that it becomes a way of life. Are you guilty of having a working trait that evolved into a habit? Share with us here.
